Reflections

In consideration of my desire to go into politics, I see that I have some of the qualifications, but I need to acquire more. My having a doctorate will certainly help, especially being that it is in organizational leadership and development. Further, my research in how culture is developed will also be very helpful.

My deficiencies lie in understanding the political process as well as law. I have a foundational understanding of business and contract law, but I feel having a better understanding of civil and criminal law is also necessary. I can acquire these learnings by pursuing additional degrees such as obtaining a Juris Doctorate (JD) in constitutional law and/or I can just expose myself to experiences that will afford me greater understandings in these areas. Below are my SMART goals related to the deficiencies.

SMART Goals

To be prepared for a career in politics beginning in 2030, I will do the following:

  1. Over the course of the next seven years (T), I will continue to practice my leadership skills through my administrative role (A) here at Adams State. In this, I will take time each month to reflect on my successes and failure as a leader and create a report to that end (S, M, R).

  2. I will also begin studying law. I will start by reading the constitution (S, M, R, A) before May (T). I will continue by talking to Dr. Michale Mumper (S, M, R, A) and get some direction on how I can advance my skills. I will talk to him be the end of the Spring semester (T).

  3. For the next several years I will use at least four hours a week (T, M) of my free time to read (A, R) more on constitutional law (S).
